An implant is nothing but an artificial tooth root which can be made from various materials including titanium. Unlike removable dentures or fixed bridges, dental implants are surgically "implanted" under the gum tissue in the jaw bone.

Generally, age is not a barrier if you are in good health with healthy gums. |
| |
You must have proper bone structure in your mouth to support the dental implants surgery. |
| |
People who may not be good candidates for dental implants surgeries are those with chronic problems such as clenching the jaw or grinding teeth, those with certain medical conditions such as diabetes and those undergoing radiation or chemical therapy for cancer. |
| |
Heavy smoking and alcohol use might also rule out the option of dental implants treatment. |
| |
For long term success of the dental implants treatment, you must maintain excellent oral hygiene habits and regular visits to your dental care centre. |

What are the advantages and disadvantages of dental implants?
|
| |
Any dental implants surgery may offer increased stability because it fuses with the patient's own healthy bone, allowing the replacement teeth to feel more natural and some people find the fit more comfortable. |
| |
People often choose dental implants treatments because they may look more natural than dentures or bridges and feel more secure, allowing you to look and feel better about yourself.
|
| |
The cost for implants surgery may be more than for traditional bridges or dentures. When used together with bridges, implants are more similar in look and feel to natural teeth. |

Steps involved in dental implant?
|
There are several steps involved in the placement of a dental implant, and these steps can vary depending on a number of factors. The first step is to anchor the implant with surgery. Depending on the type of implant, the surgery will "implant" the anchor, in some cases with a post already attached that is used to connect the anchor to the replacement tooth. However in some cases, a second surgery may be necessary to place the post. Once the implant has bonded with the jaw bone and after the gums have healed, an artificial tooth which resembles a natural tooth is made and attached to the implant. The dental implant treatment time varies depending on individual needs but can take a number of appointments and may take up to nine months to complete...

The implant already in the jaw bone, the abutment that will be mounted on the implant and finally the implant tooth will be built around the abutment. |

The dental implant is placed in the jaw bone and revealed after a few months. In this case during the dental implant surgery the dentist placed a healing cap immediately. During the healing of the gums the gingiva formed a nice shape around the healing cap. This will enable an aesthetic finish when placing the final restored tooth. |

The abutment is connected to the dental implant. |

The final result a beautiful restored dental implant tooth. Notice how the gingiva surrounds the tooth perfectly making it impossible to notice that this is a false tooth! |

Open Wall Sinus lift And Bone Graft Procedure:
The following pictures show the sequence of an open wall sinus lift. The sinus is reached from the outer (buccal) side of the jaw. The gum is cut open and the outer wall of the upper jaw is exposed.
An opening is cut in the bone
The “window” is pushed in – exposing the inner part of the bone and the lower part of the sinus .(The membrane separating the jaw bone from the sinus space is – the sinus membrane.)
Bone graft material is placed in the space and slowly the sinus ceiling is pushed up and more bone graft material is filled into the new space.

Finally the area is stitched up after sufficient bone graft material has been applied into the area. |
